Social Networking: better or worse than the real thing.

Social networking is the interaction of people using technology. Examples of such are sites like Facebook, Myspace, and Xanga. It allows people to find one another and get connected without even having to meet face to face. Now the question is, is this good or bad. My concept of the idea is that though it helps us get in contact with lost friends or distant families, people also use it to talk to their neighbors. They take the face to face interaction out of the equation and as result we have people sit indoors all day on their butts talking to people through Facebook instead of the traditional hanging out for a bite to eat and open discussions on their lives over a hot meal. I'm sure there are many pros and cons on this debate but, do you think that the pros really outweigh the cons?

  1. I agree, social media has become a replacement for face-to-face communication. How often do you use sites such as these in your personal life? I am also doing my paper on the pros and cons of Facebook and will be touching upon this subject as well. Good luck on yours!

  2. I fear that the next generation will have no idea how to communicate with each other. I have already noticed the affects on me, and it can only get worse from here. I am one of those people who would rather you email or text rather than call. You want to meet in person? Ha!

  3. NO!!! I do not think the pro's outweigh the con's. I said this on another classmate's blog with a similar topic. I think from how you worded your statement that you do not think the pro's outweigh the con's. I agree with James too, social media HAS replaced face-to-face communication, which I think is a huge part of leading a normal life. I believe the youth of this society and others spend too much time in front of the computer and not enough time out conversing with others.

  4. One way in which social media is wonderful is when the distance involved is enormous. We move about to different places, but a social media hub like Facebook represents a constant. It's bad that it is taking away time from actual physical interraction, but this is one way it is useful.
